The Way Things stand…

Now this post might be interpreted by some as a bit of idle navel-gazing, but I’m going to post it and see if it strikes a chord with anyone.
Recently SL has been going through some fairly significant troubles. It is becoming clear that as a vehicle it will now never achieve the objectives of its creator (Philip Rosedale). World economic breakdown of the capitalist market system is imminent and protectionism is becoming the watchword of more and more administrations. As a result the home of SL is closing its eyes and ears increasingly to the outside world (as it did once before, last century). Consequently, those of us on the periphery of the “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave” feel that they are once more out in the cold of the big, bad world. Some of the recent statements issued by groups purporting to support freedom from state oppression in the USA beggar belief in their ingenuosity.
So intolerance of other cultures and lifestyles will gain creedence among those who seek to protect their own hoard against those who would steal it from them via the state (the poor, the sick and the less able).

In the UK the philosophy of philanthropy is being lionised again as a way for the state to divest itself of any resposibility for its needy. Suggestions that the state might ask the rich to give a little more to the disadvantaged are being vilified as socialism and state oppression.

In SL minorities are seen as a mill-stone around the necks of the enlightened majority. Thus their needs are cast aside in a move to improve SL for those who are already far more comfortable than most. Those whose means are modest will simply not be able to use this medium in a while, for fear of any failure or problem in the service going totally unaddressed. I should perhaps point out that the most vocal element in this clamour to reserve support to themselves is a small, privileged, and presumably well-heeled minority.

I truly despise this attitude of: “If you can’t be bothered to pay, we can’t be bothered to help you” attitude that is pervading SL, reflecting, as it does, a similar attitude in RL.

Philanthropy used to work, but that was before greed was seen as good, and we were told that there was no such thing as society.

The future is a blank page on which we can write. Is all that will appear there going to be “F*** you, I’m alright”, and “It’s my way or the highway”?

Footnote: In case one or two readers of this blogpost feel that it is inappropriate for me to hold these opinions on a public forum, I would simply say ((OOC)).
