Viewer 2? why?…Oops I mean viewer 3, or do I?

A lot of the die-hard users of developments of the Viewer 1/Snowglobe, ie Phoenix, Ascent, Imprudence, Singularity, Cool VL and Rainbow etc. will be heartened by the news that Mesh rendering (NOT upload) will be incorporated in most of these viewers in the relatively near future. Phoenix announced their adaptation last Monday night and Henri Beauchamp (Cool VL)has said for a while that Mesh rendering will be possible in V1. Others are Mesh compatible or will be soon, we are told.
This must have been a difficult decision on the part of Phoenix/Firestorm devs, since a huge effort has been made to turn Linden Lab’s Sow’s Ear into a Silk purse. Resistance to V2 has been vocal and pretty unrelenting in a sizeable portion of SL’s more resilient userbase, and the introduction of Viewer 3 by LL (really it is only an iteration of 2.8) I suspect forced some hands.
Since the unfortunate changes at KirstenLee Cinquetti’s operation (I think I can add nothing but Best Wishes there), there isn’t really a V2 clone that has a significant userbase, other than Firestorm.
While a lot of us are greatly cheered by the news that the excellent Phoenix Viewer will live on, I cannot help but think that, sooner or later, LL will make some changes that render (no pun intended) V1s unuseable in SL. The fact that I spent quite a lot of RL money on a whizzy new PC to Run Firestorm Mesh is a nuisance now but I don’t think it was money wasted, somehow.
