Connections, connections…

I have no real idea what has affilcted my connection with SecondLife servers for the past 5 days, but last night, at last I was able to log in, and teleport successfully from my LeTigre RC sim. There is a growing body of evidence that some fundamental feature of SecondLife has been “upgraded” in one of the non-restart rounds of Scheduled Maintenance of SL’s central servers. The upshot of this is that many residents, who, like me have spent thousands of £ or $US on their SecondLives and maybe £1000-2000 on their hardware are seeing it all set to naught by these changes.

Some incompatibility between SL servers and our routers causes them to momentarily lose contact with SL, or reboot unexpectedly. This almost always results in being logged out of SL. It happened to me 3 times in quick succession today, and a technician at my ISP said that my data useage had exceeded their “fair use” policy. This despite my router showing dowwload volume of less than 100MB/hr. It seems that SL is, on occasions, sending data at simply too high a rate for this very robust network!

Now this is nothing more than bad operation, poor design and downright sloppy programming. There is no need for bursts of such high bandwidth to occur in SL and what it tells me is that competence is dropping below acceptable standards at the company responsible for operating SL, namely Linden Lab. This lack of competence is now extending to so-called “expert staff”.

Recent abortive Rolling Restarts are evidence aplenty of a general lack of competence, but this recent issue is set to disenfrachise many whose expenditure keeps Linden Lab interested in running SL. If SL loses these relatively high-spending users, it is only a matter of time (and not much, at that) before SL ceases to be profitable for Linden Lab, and at that time they will “pull the plug”.

One Response to “Connections, connections…”

  1. Credit where it is due, this restart seems to have lived up to expectations, lag is down a bit, rezzing is better, scripts seem to run smoother, and sim ping is down drastically all in all making for a much more stable set of servers. Now is we could get similar results in the blue steel regions we would be making progress for those areas are seriously suffering.
