Just what IS Ponyplay?

Within the online community of which I am now a part, SecondLife, Ponyplay, or rather what constitutes “correct” Ponyplay, is being hotly debated.

There has been a move to try to standardise the requirements that go to make a Pony Trainer. In some circles this has been interpreted as a move to standardise and unify the precepts of SL Ponyplay. In my mind, I assume this to mean:

1) What is the correct tack for an SL pony
2) What is the correct behaviour for an SL pony
3) What are the topics that an SL Pony Trainer needs to be conversant with
and
4) What is the “correct” relationship between an SL pony, an SL Trainer and an SL Pony Stable or Ranch.

Now to me, this has all the signs of someone attempting to herd cats, and is likely to be as effective. SL Ponyplay, rather like SL D/s (with which it is inextricably linked), is as individual as the folk taking part. It is whatever suits the individuals concerned and any attempt to standardise it is likely to meet with resistance and ultimate failure.
That there is a need for SL wide rules by which SL Ponyplay can be conducted is a given, but just how and to what extent those rules are to adhered to is really down to the individual.

As this debate continues I will add to this post, but for now that is my take on what has happened so far.

ETA 1:
So far although the idea has merit in some of its applications, the views that I have seen so far range from quite trenchantly against the idea to generally welcoming though not in favour of most of the premises. I get the overall impression that the bulk of SL ponydom is very cool on the idea of common standards.
