A Bad Day at the Office

Well, today in SL was a bit of a disaster. Primary systems failed again and Logins were effectively closed for about 4 hours. This has resonances with the cascade server failures that dogged SL in 2008 and 2009. I had thought such things were passed but it seems that SecondLife’s primary systems are about to implode again. That it happened during the Main Server rolling restarts merely compounded the confusion and probably resulted in a fair bit of hair-pulling at LL. This UK evening’s Ninja editing of the Grid Status Page merely made Linden Lab look silly…do they really think people are so blinkered that they would forget a four hour outage and multiple posts about the issue? At least the Server Forum release thread gave us correct information about the delayed restarts. It is a pity that whoever is tasked with updating that page does not share Maestro Linden’s openness. We shall see what tomorrow brings…and Thursday, which is now RC restart day and was supposed to be the day when Logins would be closed and Primary system Maintenance performed. As a side note, I am now running the latest update of the 64-bit Firestorm, 4.6.5, and I must say that it is a big improvement over 4.6.1 in terms of frame-rate on complex scenes. Many over the outstanding LL originated bugs remain to be fixed, but that is largely out of the FS developers’ hands.
